OPINION: 5 Things South-West Governors Must Do To Stop Sunday Igboho Immediately

Ever since news filtered in that the Fulani herdsmen resident in Ondo state have been allegedly ordered to vacate the state, one name that has featured prominently is Sunday Ighoho.

The man, with real names, Sunday Adeniyi Adeyemo, is a 49-year-old Nigerian human rights activist, politician, and businessman. He is the chairman of Adeson International Business Concept Ltd and the Akoni Oodua of Yoruba.

His popularity started off during the Modakeke/Ife war between 1997 and 1998, where he was a well-known defendant of the Modakeke people.

He went on to have some working relationship with the state governments and had stayed under the radar since the government of Rasheed Ladoja until this moment.

Due to the incessant killings and attacks by men suspected to be Fulani herdsmen in the state, Sunday Igboho had pioneered the move to vacate people of the Fulani ethnic group from the state.

He had supported the earlier ultimatum given by the Ondo state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu who had given the group 7 days to document their members or to leave the forests where they are currently residents in the state.

Although the Ondo governor gave some guidelines for the ultimatum, Sunday Igboho had gone ahead to effect the order without the mandate of the state government.

Just this night, the house of the Fulani leader in Oyo state was burnt to ashes, and about 11 cars destroyed.

As at the time of this report, the man was hiding in the bush with his family.

This is a legit reason for other Fulani groups to start a reprisal attack in other sorts of the country.

This move, if not checked may reciprocate what is happening in the southeast where a single man, Nnamdi Kanu has almost gone ahead to put the entire region into confusion with his actions.

The 6 southwest governors are hereby, urged to do the following to immediately stop all further harassments by Sunday Igboho.

1, The 6 southwest governors should immediately convene a regional security meeting to address the lingering crises.

2, The southwest governors should call the Are Onakakanfo, Chief Gani Adams to immediately set his house in order as he is the well-known titled warrior chief in the region.

3, Sunday Igboho should be invited to a security meeting held with the Fulani group to discuss the way forward and have a common agreement on the safety of the ethnic group in the southwest.

4, All the traditional rulers in the southwest should, as a matter of fact, review the title of Akoni Oodua bestowed on Sunday Igboho as he has succeeded in causing more problems for the region

5, Finally, the security agencies should be called in to monitor the process of mending fences and make sure Sunday Igboho does not have the liberty to muster such crowds of supporters again.

The people of the southwest who are resident in the north should not be made to bear the sufferings of the action of one man.
